Rental Assistance Still On Back Burner

Rental assistance in Illinois has been put on the back burner again as a state agency with hundreds of millions of federal tax dollars in wait pushes back the launch of a program providing assistance. Gov. J.B. Pritzker defends the ongoing eviction moratorium, saying people lost their jobs during the pandemic. “It was not right to push people into homelessness at just the moment when people need to have a home and they need protection,” Pritzker said.

In March, the Illinois Housing Development Authority website said the program would be available in April. Earlier last month, the authority said applications would open “in the near future.” This week, the website posts “an anticipated launch date of May.” The Illinois Rental Payment Program is not currently accepting applications.
