General Election - Preliminary Overview

by Cook Witter

US Senate

Senator Richard Durbin (D) was easily re-elected to the United State Senate, but with Republicans taking the majority, he will no longer be the Senate Majority Whip.

US Representatives

The Illinois Delegation will gain two Republican seats with Robert Dold (R) defeating Democratic incumbent Brad Schneider (D) in the 10thCongressional District and Mike Bost (R) defeating incumbent Bill Enyart (D) in the 12th Congressional District.  The current composition of the Illinois delegation will be comprised of 10 Democrats and 8 Republicans.

Governor and Other Constitutional Officers

With 99.54% of the precincts reporting, Republican Bruce Rauner appears to have won the Illinois Gubernatorial race by defeating Governor Pat Quinn 50.73% to 45.89%.  However, Governor Quinn has refused to concede until all votes are counted.

Incumbents Attorney General Lisa Madigan (D), Secretary of State Jesse White (D) and Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka (R) all won re-election. The race for State Treasurer between State Senator Mike Frerichs (D) and former House Republican Minority Leader Tom Cross is too close to call.  Cross currently is leading by a few thousand votes.

Illinois General Assembly

Illinois State Senate:

19 of 59 Senate seats were up for election and only 7 of the 19 seats were contested in the General Election.

Republicans have gained one seat in the Illinois Senate with the defeat of Senator Mike Jacobs (D-36, East Moline) by Neil Anderson a firefighter and paramedic in the Moline Fire Department. He will join Senator Chris Nybo (R-24, Elmhurst) who was appointed to replace Senator Kirk Dillard (R) as two newly elected faces in the Senate.   While the Senate Democratic caucus will be reduced from 40 to 39 seats, they will still have a veto proof majority.

Illinois State House:

All 118 House seats were up for election and 70 seats had no opposition (42 Democratic and 28 Republican).   At this point, out of the 48 contested races no Democratic incumbents lost their seat. While there are one or two seats that may be contested, it appears Speaker Madigan has successfully retained his 71-47 edge over Republicans and maintained his veto proof majority in the House.  There will be at least 20 “new faces” elected to serve in the House in the 99th General Assembly.
